Alutiiq Songs
Lena Amason, Stella Krumrey, Dahlia Berns, and Allison Botz were able to get together to record songs though a grant from the CIRI Foundation's "A Journey to What Matters" and in collaboration with The Old Harbor Native Corporation and the Old Harbor Alliance.
"Thank you for taking the time to learn with us. We have been working on documenting our songs both in written form and in these audio clips. We have been fortunate to have an Alutiiq Language Speaker teach us how to pronounce the words, but we also welcome any suggestions. This project will be a work in progress forever. Please email us with suggestions, collaborations, and requests."
Thank you
Kicaq and Macaq
Dedication
This Virtual Library is dedicated to our children and our children’s children, future ancestors, with dreams and hopes that all Nuniaq Alutiiq will be able to dance and sing wherever they may be, as one. We hope these songs will ground your heart back to our home and these words support your culture and connections to those that come before us, to heal the past and strengthen our future. As we continue to grow this Virtual Library, we aspire to reach even more people and inspire future generations to connect with their heritage. Grab your cousins, your moms, dads, uncles, aunties, grands, and claimed family and dance!
We want to express our heartfelt gratitude to the many who have helped us reach this point with the project. Whether it was through direct songwriting, language sharing, school involvement, or other creative means, your patience and love have been invaluable. You have all taught us so much, and we are deeply appreciative.
Honorable Mentions, Nina Zeedar, Papa George, Iballok, Larry Matfay, Florence Pestrikoff, Mary Haakanson, Nickel Alokli, Carl Christiansen, Stella Krumrey, Olga Keim, Kathy Nelson, Wilma Berns, Sperry Ash… and so many others. We want to thank you for nurturing this love of language, culture, and song with so many generations.
To the Village of Nuniaq, we owe a special thanks, your eagerness to learn and your inspiration have been instrumental in projects like this.

Allison’s (Macaq) Note to the Project: Thank you, Lena (Kicaq), for your significant impact on our community. Your teachings have pushed me out of my comfort zone and you have always been our anchor to our songs and language. I named you Kicaq for this exact reason. You are the anchor to our culture, and you have done so faithfully for so many years. Quyanna, my friend!
